One of my favorite parts of the Christmas Eve service at Church is the very end. Christmas Eve at the church I usually go to on Christmas Eve (my mom’s) is a Big Deal. The sanctuary is decorated with pine boughs and often musical instruments. There’s an adult choir, handbell choir, children’s choir, lots of organ music, a pageant, and a homily. And at the very end, the lights go out. Starting with the pastor, and then the ushers, and then the congregation holding last year’s used candles with little paper tutus, candlelight slowly fills the sanctuary. I love the slow creep of light through the congregation, starting with just a few pinpricks of light and ending with a great glow and everyone singing all together. O Come All Ye Faithful, indeed.
